What exactly is AI? (in plain, simple language)

AI is short for Artificial Intelligence, which literally means intelligence that is built. In plain words, it is a computer program that learns to do things we used to think only humans could do, like writing text, drawing pictures, answering questions or even building a website.

What makes it different from an ordinary program is that we don't tell it what to do step by step. We show it lots of examples and it learns the pattern on its own, just like a child who learns to talk by watching and listening.

Imagine teaching someone to tell a cat from a dog. You show them a thousand photos of cats and a thousand photos of dogs. Little by little they learn to spot the differences. AI works in exactly the same way, only with millions of examples and much faster.

This process is called training. The more and better examples it sees, the smarter it gets.

Tools like ChatGPT or Claude use something called a large language model. These models have read a huge amount of text and learned how words fit together. That is why, when you ask them a question, they give you a smooth and meaningful answer.
